Molinaseca sits at the bottom of the descent from the Cruz de Ferro, and it feels like an arrival. After the exposed mountain, the steep rocky path, and the relentless downhill, this riverside town with its Romanesque bridge, its swimming spot in the Río Meruelo, and its bars with outdoor terraces is exactly what tired legs need.

The bridge — the Puente de los Peregrinos — is beautiful. In summer, pilgrims wade and swim in the river below it. The water is cold and clean and perfect.

The main street has several bars, restaurants, and albergues. The wine of the Bierzo (Mencía grape, mostly) starts appearing on menus here — it's lighter and fruitier than the Rioja you've been drinking since Logroño.

Fiesta

The Fiesta de la Virgen de las Angustias in mid-August is the main celebration, with processions, music, and food.

The Road

The walking from Molinaseca to Ponferrada is flat and suburban — about 7 km along the river valley. The mountain drama is behind you; the Bierzo valley lies ahead.

I don’t know the name, it was something with Anjeli. They made the best fresh sandwiches. The shop owner was so nice!

Lovely garden with food truck and bar across from river / La Josema restaurant. Chicken, burgers (very good), hot dogs, nachos, and sweet and savory crepes. Lovely staff, affordable and fresh food. A gem!

The town wakes up late. But there is a churreria that has good coffee. It is on the main/front road in town. Casa Morrisco. Excellent tostada

Stayed there only one night and it was terrific. We arrived too late for them to prepare a dinner meal ( They need a certain amount of people to have time to prepare). However, breakfast the next morning was fantastic and the hosts are gracious. The bath towels were large and fluffy, which I really appreciated!

The Cruz de Ferro was moving for us, even a bit emotionally draining. Then the path down from the Alta took a toll on knees and ankles, so we took a rest day. Great call! We stayed at Casa San Nicolas and all the wonderful reviews are all true.

The place is spotless, the food (breakfast and dinner) are superb and the hosts are truly amazing. It was a great blessing to stay with them.

Tim, who opens the church, is a man of great insight. Take a few minutes to chat with him. This town was truly an oasis of rest in the midst of the Camino.
