The Collado de Lepoeder (1,430 m) is the highest point on the Napoleon Route and the border ridge between France and Spain. From here the route begins its long descent through beech forest toward Roncesvalles, dropping nearly 600 m over the final 5 km. The change is dramatic — from exposed ridge to dense woodland in the space of a few hundred meters. The path is steep and can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Take your time on the descent; tired legs and wet roots are a bad combination.
