Roncesvalles

The Collado de Lepoeder (1,430 m) is the highest point on the Napoleon Route and the border ridge between France and Spain. From here the route begins its long descent through beech forest toward Roncesvalles, dropping nearly 600 m over the final 5 km. The change is dramatic — from exposed ridge to dense woodland in the space of a few hundred meters. The path is steep and can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Take your time on the descent; tired legs and wet roots are a bad combination.

We took the road to the right, some nice blackberries to eat. Others said the forest route was steep and tough on legs.

Traversing the Pyrenees is challenging. I was advised to take the highway/GR at the pilgrims office for safety, but it adds quite some time to your trek and upon arrival to Roncesvalles it seemed that most everyone else took the forest route. Make your decisions, be safe, buen camino!
