Services are in the town centre, but the camino doesn't enter it — it crosses the main road and the railway before heading out. Turn right at the main road to reach the historic quarter along the river, which has a pleasant park and makes a decent overnight stop.

From the river, the Castelo de Almourol is visible on its island in the middle of the Tejo. The castle was rebuilt by the Knights Templar in 1171 and is one of the most photogenic medieval fortifications in Portugal. Boat trips to the island run from the riverbank in Barquinha.

Fiesta

Saint Anthony is celebrated on the 13th of June.

History

The Castelo de Almourol sits on a small island in the Tejo and has been a defensive position since Roman times. The Templars rebuilt it as part of their defensive line along the river in the 12th century. Its isolated, fairy-tale setting has inspired legends — most famously the tale of the Moorish princess who haunts the castle at the full moon.

The Road

The camino crosses the main road and then crosses the railway before heading out of town. It does NOT enter the town. After the tracks, keep mostly straight at the roundabout. The way is well marked.

Only 40 meters to the left of The Path when you have entered Vila Nova da Barquinha. The coffee with whipped cream (galão) and calories rich chokade cake is just what I wanted. Clean toilettes and the lady behind the bar spoke English flawlessly 🙂

We stayed at Casa das Memorias last night and must agree with the comments from July 2024. Easy to get there and easy to pick up the route. One of the best places we have stayed thus far during this Camino. Comfortable beds and extremely clean facility. Host was super welcoming. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Casa das Memorias last night and this is one of the best places we have ever stayed on Camino, and this is our 2nd Camino. (SJPP to Santiago last year). Childhood home of the owner. All rooms were very clean with A/C. Had everything we could want and more. Tons of food and drinks at amazing prices 0.6€ for a beer. We would stay again. It was €52 for two. Do not miss if you’re in the area.

Camino de Sant…

Single room with breakfast €40 was worth it. The hotel totally modern, clean, great bed, new bathroom, toiletries. River park and good restaurant close by with daily menu €8.50. A nice break.

Camino de Sant…

It worth its 1 star. The bed was not comfortable at all. I woke up with a back pain. For the rest it is ok if you don't touch the curtains, the carpets or the blanket.
40 euros for a room with private bathroom.
