History

The town's name gives a bit of evidence to the claim that it was settled first by the French followers of Portugal’s first king.

The Road

The camino goes through the municipal gardens and then under the N10. From this point, the new camino might get confused with the old route. Shortly after the camino passes under the N10, it passes a small factory and then turns right. <<The old route continued straight here and took you over the tracks and back to the busy road.>> By turning right the camino continues along a much quieter and safer path to Vala do Carregado.

NOTE: The old arrows indicating the way over the busy road may still exist.

It was worth waiting for a table at restaurante o retiro. Busy and really good atmosphere. Delicious meal and very friendly staff. We had a drink at the bar next door while we waited. Completely different but also nice in its own way, very friendly owners.

We stayed at the Lezeiria hotel, a lovely and comfy spot for a great nights sleep. Directions to leave this morning are a little confusing. Yesterday we walked the narrow N 10 and found it a little dangerous on some roads but hoping to jump back onto the new path, i will follow up after for more clarity

A very pretty and delightful town, lots of locals out catching up for coffee or a drink in the many outdoor (for this time of year) cafes. I seem to be the only pilgrim in town on this day, but found an amazing little restaurant, Maioral restaurant and bar, right next to Hopedaria Maioral, fabulous meal and lovely staff.

After a 40km walk from Lisbon on Day 1 of my Camino, it was wonderful to get into Villa Franca. Cute town worth an hour or so to wander around

Easy , but along with the factories and tomato fields. Not a lots of fun. Happy windy instead of heat.

Fair big local town without tourism. Charming with local well makeup ladies who were chatting and greeting each other on the street , in cafe in the morning. Very local fabrics.

I spent about 20 extra min just wandering the streets and don’t regret it for a second. Such a beautiful town with so much history.
