A quiet farming village on the Margeride plateau where the Seuge river has its source. Chanaleilles sits at the heart of a landscape of granite pastures bordered by dry stone walls and scattered patches of forest. There may be a gite operating here; check locally. The village has a modest Romanesque church.

History

Chanaleilles gives its name to one of the oldest noble families in the Gevaudan. The village was historically part of the network of hamlets that sustained pilgrims crossing the remote Margeride on their way south.

I stayed at Lou Grandjo because I wanted to stop at Chanaleilles. Not a very slick operation, and A bit pokey. No entry till late pm, although there was no warning of this. Food was very nice but it took some time to get it on the table and the host stood in the corner watching us eat it so he could then clear it away and serve the next course -not conducive to a relaxed meal. Maybe this why it’s a bit cheaper.

Accueil antipathique. Repas très moyen et très peu copieux. Il ne fallait pas avoir faim. Local des sacs bcp trop petit, c était un peu le bazar pour prendre ses affaires. Chambres très moyennes. Je ne le recommande pas.
