Estella, a pesar de no ser una ciudad muy grande, tiene mucho que ofrecer. El camino entra por el río y se mantiene en la orilla oeste. Para ver muchas de las iglesias o alojarse en alguno de los albergues, hay que cruzar el río Ega.

La ciudad cuenta con un impresionante número de edificios de importancia histórica, tantos que visitarlos todos llevaría la mayor parte de un fin de semana. Los dos que no hay que perderse son el Palacio de los Reyes de Navarra(que nunca llegó a ser utilizado por el Rey de Navarra) y la Iglesia de San Pedro de la Rúa. Las otras son la Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro (al entrar en la ciudad a la izquierda, cerrada desde 1881), la Iglesia de San Miguel y la Basílica del Puy, que requiere subir a lo alto de la ciudad. Asegúrese de pasar suficiente tiempo paseando por las calles para asimilarlo todo.

Si se encuentra en Estella para un día de descanso y exploración, hay algunas excelentes rutas de senderismo en las cercanías. Solicite mapas en la oficina de información turística situada junto al Palacio.

Fiesta

El jueves es día de mercado en Estella, igual que hace 900 años. Asegúrese de pasar por la Plaza de los Fueros (frente a la Iglesia de San Juan) para disfrutar de una fresca selección de casi todo lo que está de temporada en toda España.

Estella tiene dos patrones, San Andrés y La Virgen del Puy.Elprimero se celebra como "El Viernes de Gigantes" el primer viernes antes del primer domingo de agosto. Abundan los gigantes y se celebran encierros. El segundo, por la Virgen, se celebra el 25 de mayo.

History

Geográficamente hablando, Estella se sitúa al norte de lo que de otro modo sería un fácil paseo hacia el oeste desde Villatuerta. Su crecimiento como centro comercial no se debió a los peregrinos (como ocurrió en la mayoría de los lugares), sino a las manipulaciones del rey Sancho Ramírez a finales del siglo XI.

Si te alojaste en uno de los albergues de la parte nueva de la ciudad, cruza de nuevo el río para retomar el camino fuera de la ciudad.

Was surprised to see so much activity in the streets for such a small compact city. Tons of ancient Roman streets, bridges, and buildings, crafts, exhibits. Great for people watching.

This was such a fantastic stop for me - warm welcome from the sisters - spotlessly clean bedroom & bathroom with crisp clean towel & bed linen
In the kitchen dining area - food & drinks was laid out to help yourself .
My first night in a private room for 20 euros
Such kind, unassuming hospitality

Excellent, best accommodation on the Camino so far. Sun terrace, washing facilities (5€ for machine use but free use of laundry room). Lovely hosts.

Do NOT follow Google Maps to get here, it will take you over the top of the town unnecessarily. Instead, get directions to the Plaza de Toros (bulll ring) then it's a 5 minute walk up the hill from there.

Loved my stay at Alda on a family filled square. Walked around the main plazas and ate. You can stock up on anything you need for trail.

One of the best alburgues I have stayed in. The hosts are wonderful and can speak English. Unique building, comfortable beds, library/ meditation room and delicious breakfast. They are definitely here to make the pilgrim experience a special one. I stayed for two days and could have stayed longer!

Self check in with an automated dispenser providing you with your room key.

Great location and a view of the old church. Cross a small bridge and you are in a newer part of town within 5 minutes.

We were lucky to be there during a fiesta so the place was booming with activity.

Recommend.

It was great service.
Delicious food. Menu options included vegan food. I had chicken masala, mixed salad, my husband had lentil soup and lomo which is pork chops. I also had a plate of hummus and it was oh so satisfying after our walk in from Puente la Reyna.

I highly recommend this hostel. It's very well designed and Put is the sweetest woman I've ever met. They will do your laundry for a small fee. I don't recommend the breakfast however. Just get something fresh on the way out of town.
