Castrojeriz is deceptively long — the camino follows the Calle Oriente through a town that seems to go on forever. Don't rush it. Three churches, a ruined castle, and a tunnel system connecting the cellars beneath the main street all reward a slower pace.

The Colegiata de Santa María del Manzano has a 13th-century Black Madonna. The Iglesia de Santo Domingo houses a tapestry museum. The Iglesia de San Juan, at the far end, has a beautiful cloister. All three are worth seeing.

The castle ruins on the hilltop above town provide the best view of the meseta you'll get from any direction — the climb is short but steep. From the top you can see the route ahead stretching west toward the Alto de Mostelares and, on a clear day, well into Palencia.

Several albergues, bars, and restaurants line the main street. A couple of small shops handle provisions. The town has more character than its size suggests — the length of the Calle Oriente and the quality of its buildings speak to medieval prosperity that the surrounding farmland no longer supports.

Fiesta

San Juan is celebrated on June 24. Santa Catalina on November 25-26.

History

Beneath the main street runs a tunnel system connecting the cellars of the houses on both sides. It was used for storage and, in times of trouble, as an escape route. The castle above dates to the Visigothic period and was rebuilt repeatedly by Moorish and Christian rulers. The town received its charter in the 10th century.

The Road

The road ahead climbs to the Alto de Mostelares — the highest point on the meseta section. There's little shade between here and the crossing into Palencia.

Not listed here, but I stayed at ‘el rincón del chef’ a Casa Rural 1.5 km into town (which is ideal as you’ll have to walk the 3 km strip to get out of Castrojeriz and back on the Camino). JJ , the owner, was very welcoming and gifted me with a divine leg massage, just out of his good heart.
The breakfast could have been much better for what I ve payed, but I d still highly recommend the place if you’re looking for a private room.

Wonderful hosts here. Really special tour of the wine cellar after the pilgrim dinner and private rooms are fantastic. Hosts will also do laundry for you for a fee (wash / dry).

Saw La Taberna listed on Wise Pilgrim and stopped for a bite. Amazing burger as suggested by another post and literally the best aperol spritz I’ve had .. maybe ever. Cute back patio and nice people watching out front in the afternoon sun.

The town has a pharmacy, supermarket and bank. Many of the villages are cash only, so it’s good to restock supplies here. There is a lovely feel to the town which is overlooked by a castle ruin dating back to the 9th Century.

Stayed at la rinconada private room, perfect with a nice breakfast and laundry. Up the town Saturdays definitely and maybe others days have 6:30pm meditation and 7:30pm Tibetan bowls meditation. Pizza is great at el fuerno. Beautiful views, and cool churches

Very few people are mentioning great stuff in these towns, it seems to be all restaurant reviews and similar, I could have stayed home for that.
There is a great show in this town called "Iacobeus" - Centro de interpretación del Camino de Santiago
I was thrilled by it yet no one else has mentioned it here. It is truly brilliant, so much so, that afterward I waited till I had guided three pilgrims in. It is 1 euro for pilgrims and 5 to 10 euros for others. Please go and see it, I will be putting a 5 star review on Google. Much of it is in english. Put "Iacobeus" - Centro de interpretación del Camino de Santiago into Google to find it, but it is on the main path.
Let's have more of these must see items.

The food is incredible here - amazing burgers, steaks and many other things to eat. The restaurant is very beautiful & atmospheric with multiple areas including the front terrace and a cute back terrace. One of our best camino meals.

Food was good/very good. Three course meal. A bit of musty smell but it’s an old building(what else can you expect). Relaxing. Right across from Alburgue Rosalia

Disappointed as this establishment is/was closed - it was a Wednesday. Was looking forward to their menu.

Also the website does not seem to be active!

I am sure it is great with all the positive reviews
