Has a bar, but the hours are unpredictable. If it's closed, the only option for supplies before Villamartín Grande is a detour to San Vicente — accessible from the LU-133 without adding distance.

Notice

If the bar in Vilela is closed, the only option for buying supplies between here and Villamartín Grande is in San Vicente, a short detour from the camino described below.

The Road

Take the turn off to the right to follow a smaller road through the forest. This road follows a broad bend and eventually turns back towards the LU-133 (which was the main road in Vilela). Before the camino gets all the way to the road, it turns to the right along a path. NOTE: At this point you do have the option of continuing straight to the LU-133 where you can find a coffee in the town of San Vicente without adding any extra distance to your walk. When you get to the LU-133 turn right. At the far end of the sparsely populated village the camino turns from the north to cross over the LU-133 so you can simply follow it (about 2km) all the way to this junction. When the official camino returns to the LU-133 it does not follow it; instead it crosses to the other side and descends along a path to the next road. It then zig zags a bit as it descends via paved roads to the bridge in Arante.

Lovely!! From thr moment we walked in we were made to feel special and well taken care of. The owners Ralph and Maria Bernice were delightful and made of welcome in their home like old friends. Dinner and breakfast were some of the best food we have had on the Camino. It was also very close to the Camino only about 300 yards off the route. 5 Star Rating.

I’ve done five Caminos, this is in my top three favorite places I’ve stayed. Magnificent old Indios Mansion, now a lovely small hotel with solid dark wood to die for. Owners Ralph and Beatrice welcomed me warmly even though I was a late walk up, and Beatrice made me an amazing dinner. I slept like a baby in an incredibly comfortable room and bed. Really hope to bring my wife back.

This hotel was amazing! It was pricey $150 EUR plus $25 EUR for dinner if you would like. But, it was the best meal I have had in Spain! The owner bought this house a year ago and has obviously put a ton of effort into it. She and her partner are very warm and friendly and speak perfect English. The grounds are beautiful - they have created a peaceful sanctuary for their guests to lounge and relax in their outdoor space. The home and my room were very clean. The bed and pillow were super comfortable and very luxurious comforter/ duvet blanket. This is a hidden gem on the Camino del Norte. Also, the owner expressed to me that pilgrims are her favorite client as we're often "very zen" (content, happy) once we reach her home. Five star hotel! Worth the price of your wanting to treat yourself. I didn't have breakfast, so can't comment except to note that they offer it (I believe for $10 EUR).

If your description of the albergue in Vilela refers to A.Pena, the correction is needed. Both the bar/cafe and the albergue are open. Located nicely directly at the Camino. As of September 2024
