‌VARIATION through Valtuille de Arriba

A variant route through Valtuille de Arriba branches off near Pieros, winding through vineyards before rejoining the main camino on the approach to Villafranca del Bierzo. It's about 1 km longer but the walking is quieter and more scenic — vineyard paths rather than road.

I hated the detour with the dying/dead village and the long hill to climb back up, but based on the comments from the ones who took the road, maybe I made the right choice. It felt like getting lost though. But, the vineyards and the view after the climb were lovely

Definitely take the route through the extra town. It may add a km but we think would be so worth it. We took the road route and it was very dangerous. We walked for about 4km on the side of the motorway. There was no footpath or barrier and felt extremely unsafe the entire time. Would not recommend.

Gorgeous, divinely peaceful, and a delightful precursor to the next awesome detour at villa franca via pradela! Do them both!

This section was one of our favorite of the Camino so far and we’ve been walking since Pamplona. We walked through at 7pm - the light was perfect on the vineyards - the apple trees were blooming. The townsfolk were friendly. It was walking through a fairytale wine region. Old gnarly head pruned vines everywhere.

There are a few climbs but nothing out of the ordinary. If you are in Camino shape it will be easy. And so worth it.

Then be sure to drink some local wine in Villafranca when you arrive!!! We had a great meal and bottle of Mencia at Bar Sevilla.

At the end of a long day this can be very challenging with the nonstop hills and cars passing with a dust of dirt from the dry road.

Lovely detour though vineyards and beautiful landscapes! It is a little to climb, but nothing too hard.
