Collado de Bentartea

A statue of the Virgin stands at the Pic d'Orisson (1,060 m), marking the point where the route leaves the last of the trees behind and enters fully exposed terrain. From here to the descent into Roncesvalles there's no shelter of any kind. On a clear day the views in every direction are immense — the Basque hills rolling north into France, the high Pyrenees to the east.

Windy at the Virgin Mary today, but bright sun & cool.

Walked here while I waited for Borda to open and in case the weather interfered with my walk to Roncesvalles the next day (it did). About an hour each way and hilly.

Beautiful views. Excellent place for a break.

Camino de Sant…

There are large trees felled on the roadside a few hundred metres further. Much better place to sit and refuel as the viewpoint can be crowded with cars and vans.
