Hontanas

The spring at the Arroyo San Bol (literally 'Saint Bol's Creek') is reputed to cure sore feet — whether this is folk medicine or placebo effect, soaking them in the cold water certainly helps. A small albergue operates here, converted from what was once something of a hippie hideaway before being taken over and modernized by a nearby municipality.

The short detour from the camino is clearly marked. It's a peaceful spot in a landscape that can feel overwhelmingly open.

The Road

Don't let the endless wheat worry you. Hontanas stays hidden from view until you're almost on top of it — the village sits in a small depression that's invisible from a distance on the flat meseta.

This albergue is open and accepting bookings (April 2026) however they do not have internet connection hence their difficulty to replying to WhatsApp.

After reading the last comment, I messaged on What's App, - they did answer but only to say that it was closed so couldn't stay. Such a shame, it looked nice from a distance as we walked on by!

If you send a WhatsApp message they will reply. Thankfully I sent it the day before. Today is Thursday so not sure when it’s closed as a previous message said Friday

I stayed here Sept 2022 one if the best Albergues on the Camino, plunge pool, great vegetarian meal and great host, sang Cuba songs and danced Salsa with the ladies.

Arrived at 13:45, waited until 14:30 before cutting my losses. Host in Hontanas says it’s closed on Fridays.

A wonderful afternoon, and a tasty meal prepared by Lourdes, our friendly host.

Clean and simple, with a pins that apparently has healing properties. Worth a try on those sire Camino feet!
