A large town that the camino tries, with limited success, to avoid. Services are available but stay close to the arrows — they're difficult enough to find without wandering off track. The river walk from Sacavem passes through here.

Most of the guides suggest a very long first day, possibly because the first Albergues aren’t available until you reach Dormidas (28.6km) or Alhandra (35.1km).

We didn’t want to walk that far on the first day, so looked for another option a bit closer to Lisbon and pre-booked Hotel Santa Iria VIP Executive in Alverca (16km from the Cathedral).

Exit the boardwalk at Pontao da BP and follow the track over the railway and motorway. Turn left and walk along the footpath to the crossing at the roundabout. Hotel is right there. Good value and very big meals in the restaurant
