Foncebadón was almost completely abandoned by the late 20th century — a ghost village on the mountain above the Bierzo. The pilgrim revival brought it back. Buildings have been restored, albergues and bars opened, and the village now functions as the last stop before the Cruz de Ferro.

The atmosphere is stark. At 1,440 m, the village sits above the tree line in a landscape of heather, gorse, and rock. In mist or rain it feels utterly remote. The handful of albergues and bars provide warmth, food, and company — all welcome at this altitude.

Stock up if you haven't already. The next reliable services are in El Acebo or Molinaseca, on the far side of the mountain.

History

Foncebadón was once a significant settlement, with a pilgrim hospital and a monastery. The hermit Gaucelmo established the hospital in the 11th century to assist pilgrims crossing the mountain. By the 1990s, only a handful of inhabitants remained. The village's resurrection is one of the more visible examples of the Camino revival's impact on depopulated rural Spain.

The Road

From Foncebadón, the Cruz de Ferro is about 2 km ahead on a gentle climb through open heath. On a clear morning, the views across the Montes de León are immense.

Small pension, great rooms with private bath/shower. Lovely terrace. Incredible, tasty dinner and great breakfast. Perfect stop after difficult hike from Rabanal.

The first cafe when you arrive has a varied menu that’s delicious. It’s cozy with ample seating. One of the best breakfasts on the Camino. Crepes, tortillas, avocado toast, omelets, smoothies, etc.

I want to also second a first impression of La Taberna De Gaia. Not on the list of Albergues, but stepped in for a beer and also felt thrown into medieval times. Check out the excellent Google reviews.

Could have been a place for refuge. Nothing open.

As I walked into town, I was accosted by a man masturbating. He grabbed at my bag and followed me into town--just as the Camino narrowed and I entered Astorga. Phoned 091. Another more fluent Spanish speaking Pilgrim assisted me in calling the police. Police escorted me to town. Made a complaint. Apparently this has happened in this location before. Be careful. This was 11 a.m. I was a lone female walking Pilgrim. Buen Camino.

Best bed in an Albergue so far, great pilgrim dinner. Highly recommended

This place is completely charming. It has a Celtic / medieval flair and is warm and inviting. The staff is friendly and wants to please and they even dress the part. If you order the pilgrim’s hamburger, make sure you’re hungry because it’s the size of a cantaloupe! But it hits the spot after a long day. It’s on the right immediately as you come into town.

Entered Foncebadon as the sun was rising over the eastern hills with rays of sunlight piercing through the misty fog, which presented this little hamlet in a most charming manner. Altogether fitting it is then that I should enter the equally charming tienda, restaurant and hotel El Trasgu. Had a great breakfast with great views of the hillside. The eclectic interior decor is alone worth a visit. The proprietors are great as well. A wonderful respite after the early morning climb from Rabanal del Camino

Camino de Sant…

This place has changed since last here and not for the better. The bars seem to think everyone wants to listen to loud music. The El Trasgu bar is probably the best for food with a very good shop there.
