Azofra is a quiet Riojan town that makes a practical breakfast stop if you set off from Nájera in the morning. The main street doubles as the Camino route — you walk straight through.

The municipal albergue is well-appointed, with double rooms rather than the usual open dormitories, and has a small plunge pool for hot afternoons. A parish albergue also operates. A couple of bars — Bar Sevilla and Bar Restaurante El Descanso del Peregrino — cover meals, and a small shop handles basics.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, sits at the top of the village with an embattled tower. Inside, a carving of Santiago Apóstol depicts him as a pilgrim rather than on horseback — the walking saint rather than the warrior.

On your way out of town, fill your water bottle at the Fuente de los Romeros, a medieval pilgrim fountain on the outskirts.

History

Azofra was founded during the Roman period and known as Ausebro. The name is Arabic in origin — roughly meaning the obligation of vassals to work the lord's land — a reminder of the centuries of Moorish influence in the region.

In 1168, Doña Isabel founded a pilgrim hospital here with a church dedicated to San Pedro and a cemetery for pilgrims who died on the way. The hospital operated until the 19th century, though no physical remains survive. The town's identity has always been shaped by the Camino — the main street follows the pilgrim route exactly.

The Road

The camino between Azofra and Santo Domingo de la Calzada passes through rolling farmland and the Rioja Alta Golf Club, where pilgrims share the bar with golfers — one of the Camino's odder juxtapositions. The route no longer goes through Cirueña but passes adjacent to it; a short detour left on the main road brings you to a coffee stop if needed. Ciriñuela has been separated from the camino by a residential development, but a bar is still accessible with a brief detour. About 15 km of easy, mostly flat walking to Santo Domingo.

If you go to booking.com it might say that there are no rooms in Azofra but if you go to their own site you find what you are looking for. Best to write on WhatsApp. Great place!

Share a room with a new pilgrim Bud at the plaza and it was really really nice. The shower is brand new. It seems. The beds were comfortable. I had a big giant window that looked at the cathedral.

We ate three different meals at the Seville bar and all we’re good. And the owner and son are super friendly and patient with us with Spanish language limitations

I loved this place. It was clean. They had a nice couch downstairs and a small fridge. It was right off Camino. Code to get in door.

Stayed at La Plaza, which has no kitchen. It does have a kettle in a cupboard downstairs. Bar Seville is not open until April. There is a small grocery store which sells instant meals and a couple of fresh fruit and veg, as well as packaged ham, cheese and yoghurt among many other non-perishable grocery items.

Very pleasant town. Stayed at Pension La Plaza, a newly renovated place just up from the town square. Very nice room and balcony with private bath. Check in is at the bar in the square. Also a great pilgrims meal if so desired or may order paella. It was pleasant sitting out with the locals and on the deck. Great place to unwind after a day of walking

Booked last available a few days ahead which is the dreaded 3 bed room = expensive. However, really awesome and smooth check in electronically that this pilgrim appreciated. Keyless entries are the best, I think. EXTREMELY clean with massive terrace and fantastic view. Fabulous shower and overall best 3 bed room so far, and there’s been more than a few. Oh, I appreciate the communication from the owner/operator via WhatsApp too.

Stayed here tonight. Good place, only 2/3 full. No booking allowed.

One of the best albergues municipal I have stayed in. They have double rooms, washing laundry for 3 euros and a pool for your feet. The showers were unfortunately so hot that I couldn’t wash my hair. But great place!

I had to take the bus from logrono in order to get past the two previous cities which are sold out due to a three day weekend and a large festival. The bus was easy and cheap… only three euros and came within 1 mile of the Alberge Municipal. Not sure why the previous poster said there is no bus service, because it was an easy commute.

Municipal albergue was very nice with foot pool and all double rooms. Grocery store was very dingey, would not buy produce or refrigerated items.
