Pradela is a tiny mountain village on the alternate route between Villafranca and Trabadelo. A handful of houses, a bar that may or may not be open, and views over the Valcarce valley that justify the climb. The village has the quiet, almost-abandoned quality common to the smaller mountain settlements in this part of León.

From here the path descends through chestnut forest to Trabadelo.

The Road

The descent from Pradela to Trabadelo drops through forest on a well-marked but sometimes muddy path. The gradient is moderate.

While the lovely albuerge and cafe is closed we were able to stop at Cafe Bar for a coffee,(I didn’t see any food) a restroom stop and some time to sit before we descended.

We took the Pradela Route again this year, looking forward to good company and chestnut cake at Albergue/Cafe Lamas, but found it closed. We were so disappointed. We went on to Trabadelo for a break, remembering that most of the restaurants are before the Pradela Route merges with the main route. Be ready to backtrack along the main route (turn left, not right) about 500 meters to find cafes.

Beautiful walk, just be aware that Lamas is closed and so you’ll need to walk on to Trabadelo for a meal break.

This alternative Route is a commitment, no question. Serious uphill for several km. But soooo worth it. A perfect crisp fall day and all the families were out picking their chestnut crop. The cafe at Albuergue lama was beyond charming. Delicious nourishing food and warm caring host. Say yes to the liquor!!!

Yes it’s hard work getting up that mountain but it was all worth the effort. The hosts at the albergue are beautiful souls and the coffee and chestnut cake was worth every step. Do yourself a favor and do the alternative route.😊

The sweetest hosts, freshest food straight from the garden, beautiful chestnut liquor, stunning views, all worth it with the 8km walk uphill or flat. Just a heads up there are no benches or water fountains on the way from Villafranca, but this way was SO worth it. Could not recommend it higher.

I was the only one on this path this morning. Beautiful nature. Worth the little effort. Host was nice ans had the best chesnut cake. Do come this way

Worth the effort! Anna and Miguel open their doors to us with so much heart. If you can come for lunch, do it. The veggies are all fresh and right from the garden. If you can stay for the night, do it. Fresh air, tinkling bells, great food, cute cats, lovely family, gorgeous view, clean facilities, all around five stars ⭐️! I love-love-loved my time here!

Take the detour and stay here. Trust me. The views are amazing and so worth the climb up and the albergue is run by the sweetest couple. Anna helped me and the other guest make bracelets and served a delicious dinner. It felt like home, not like a business. Loved this experience.

When exiting Villafranca some local people tend to send you to the main camino road along the road saying the detour up the hill is dangerous. Don’t be fooled, the walking path is in very good condition and the views are just stunning. The climb is so worth it!
Miguel and Ana from the albergue in Pradela will welcome you with the best chestnut cake plus chocolate sauce.
