Notice

CAUTION - When leaving Carrión de los Condes it is extremely important to stock up on water. 17km separate it from Calzadilla de la Cueza, with little protection from the sun or wind. In recent years, a roadside kiosk has sprung up at the halfway point, but there are no guarantees that it will be open.

Fiesta

In most parts of the Catholic world San Zoilo is celebrated on the 27th of June but not in Carrión where he is the Patron Saint. Instead it is a movable feast celebrated in August;  specifically on the Monday following the second to last weekend of the month. The celebration for that day starts 5 days earlier, on Friday and it continues into Tuesday.

Nuestra Señora de Belén is celebrated on the 8th of September.

Thursdays are market days.

History

Carrión de los Condes has a rich and prosperous, to say nothing of colorful, history. Located at the intersection of the Pilgrimage road and the río Carrión it attracted merchants and a sizable population. Charlemagne is reported to have used the fields along the river as an encampment on his quest to control the pilgrimage route. Over a dozen pilgrim hospices once called Carrión home, and to this day you will find that many of the albergues are under the care of one religious order or another, the nuns of Santa María are known to sing to pilgrims.

Great stop on that 17k slog!

There are two legit outdoor stores with good gear and items if you need to pick something up or replace an item. Good restaurants and food options plus a grocery store with consistent hours and a large selection.

You don’t need to worry about packing food for the walk, this guy had a great setup. Eggs, sandwiches, fresh fruit…he even gives each customer a shot of fresh OJ with their order. Hours can be found here

Lovely town.
Would be a nice location for a rest day / half day if you are feeling tired.
Plenty to see.
Many restaurants, shops and bars.
We treated our self to a private room here.

Perfect location, great modern room, A/C, quiet, free coffee/tea/water in lobby, great public spaces indoor and out, pool, €64 for private room with private bathroom. We were very happy here. Note: self check in at a kiosk. We had a key issue later that was quickly and easily taken care of bc rep worked with woman at hardware store across the street.

Has anyone reading this been there on a saturday, sunday, or holiday?

Highly recommend stopping at the food truck 8km from Carrión. Had a (toasted!) egg cheese and ham sandwich which was to die for, and a coffee and orange juice. A welcome sight amidst a long morning walk.

Confirming that the food truck is open about 8km past Carrion. They have great coffee, sandwiches, cakes, and fruit. Also a small range of snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, nuts, crisps. Fresh orange juice and cold drinks as well. A most welcome rest stop!
