The Xunta albergue is on the far end of town, be sure to pick up supplies if you are not keen on walking back.  All services are available in town.

History

“Because I am not inscribed from Noya but from Negreira, where I was born. And from Negreira, which is up the river Tambre, they take you for the army.” - a soldier to his corporal, excerpt from ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ by Ernest Hemingway.

Hemingway lived for a short time in Santiago de Compostela and the impression that Galicia made upon him is hard to overstate. He made reference to it in many of his novels, here with the birthplace of an unamed character and later by naming the protagonist of Old Man and the Sea after the city he called home in 1929.

The Road

The camino leaves Negreira near the municipal albergue on the West side of town. If you stayed in that albergue, go back towards town a short distance and follow the signs to the church. If you are an early morning (in the dark) walker, do yourself a favor and scout the route the night before. It passes into the dark forest fairly quickly and does not emerge until just before Zas.

One of the best meals on the camino - i had grilled said and rice and my partner had Grilled octopus. The place was full of locals so you know it's good - not cheap but also not too expensive.
If you want a nice meal instead of "menu del dia" I highly recommend going here. It's in the middle of the main street on the opposite side of the road to the camino. Mardi

Best of the best in albergues.

We arrived on a Saturday, the day before Galician Language Day and the supermarkets had closed early. The only place open, with a long line was Panaderia Xallas. We decided to get in the queue. We ended up buying 2 types of cheescake in manageable portions as everything seemed to be sold by weight, along with raisin bread and cornbread - it was all so delicious! Highly recommended!!

A local told me most places (not all) close around 15:00-15:30 and don’t reopen until 20:00. Restaurante Pizzaria Milio opened at 19:30.

Awesome albergue, close to supermarket. Clean rooms, bath have toilets and showers and clean towels. Beds have pillows and blankets, and they gave me a paper sheet to cover the mattress.
Nice kitchen to cook anything.
Great washers and dryers
and clothes lines and clothes pins.
Super nice staff

We didn’t come across any other decent opportunities to get cash from an ATM, to buy our preferred healthy lunch ingredients (tomatoes/lettuce etc) or to purchase female essentials (hint, hint ladies!) until Finisterre. Wish I’d known to stock up in Negreira as I got caught short by O Logoso…

What an incredible hostel - clean, friendly staff and atmosphere, and towels! Can’t say enough - wish every hostel was like this!

I woke up this morning with bed bugs crawling on me. They were on the bed, the wall, the floor - in the entire room, not just on one bed. Avoid this albergue until the problem is fixed; the bugs were hiding in the wall. August 25, 2024.

Great customer service, everything a pilgrim needs including a dryer. Wash and dry are 4€ each, which is reasonable. Raúl, the owner, is lovely. 100% recommended.
