The Road

There are several points along this stretch of the road where you may see an errant arrow or two pointing in a direction which doesn’t feel like the camino. This is because in years past the camino followed a different route into Gernika. Follow the freshest arrows and the wooden post signs. The official camino passes the Albergue in Olabe, through the forest to the Iglesia de Santo Tómas. Shortly beyond the church is where the old camino kept to the right and downhill to the nearby village. It now turns left and heads uphill to Marmiz. Note: If you turned the wrong way at the church, and ended up back on the road, there is no need to retrace your steps. There are arrows in the next town which will direct you along the old route to Gernika, a blend of countryside and pedestrian walkways.

The albergue is ok. Nice views, quiet, dinner-not the best but ok. Not too crowded with people. But the beds! Guys, you can’t propose such noisy beds with such poor mattresses to piligrims. People need to have a proper rest! I woke up from my every turn in the bed because it’s metal and it gives huge noise. It’s not good at all. The mattress is poor and not good for proper sleep as well.

We stayed in Markina the night before where all 9 private rooms were taken… after the dorms for all nights, we thought to alternate with a private room. So when it listed “offers private rooms”, we thought we’d book one here.
Through a small turning stairs, we came on an attic that was huge, so it’s a nice space, but open. A wooden fence with open spaces above the living room and on the other side above the hall. No wall or door to close for some privacy, and no private bathroom. I had to ask for towels (big part of why to book private rooms more and then is the own bathroom, a real towel and some privacy 🤷‍♀️).
The meal was ok, but all the other days in albergues we ate much much better for the same price.

We stayed at Andiketxe and Borja the proprietor was awesome. He made sure our laundry got done and cooked a fabulous dinner and breakfast the next morning, it is right on the Camino.

Albergue is quite nice, dinner for 10 eur and not bad. Breakfast from 7.30 for maybe 4 or 5? The albergue opens at 3pm but there's a bar with food on the camino on the main road before turning right up the hill through the village.

Very nice Albergue, calm with beautiful views. Well organised,
