A small hamlet on the Samos route near a river crossing. The restaurant Mesón O Vao serves meals and has become a popular stop for pilgrims on this variant. Beyond here the route approaches Sarria.

I took the longer route, and it was beautiful. After the sharp left turn into the woods it was fine but I did encounter a dangerous dog. I should say that I like dogs, I’m not skittish around dogs, and I’ve been around them enough to know the difference between a running, barking dog that wants to play and a running, barking dog that wants to rip out your larynx. This was the latter. I’m 184cm and 100kg and still had to yell and swing my water bottle to keep him at bay. Despite the scenery and lack of vehicles, I can’t in good conscience recommend this route while that dog is around. If you do decide to take this route, keep your trekking poles handy after the left turn, and watch your six.

We left Samos early this morning & just followed the arrows to Aguiada. The route follows the river most of the way and is well marked & shady, as well as very beautiful. Even once you rejoin the road after Aguiada the path is pleasant.

I tried to take the longer, recommended route today and I wish I had not. The signage was minimal and at the top of a rise on the side of of a barn is a large painted yellow arrow directing you down an overgrown path. After 50m it was almost impenetrable and I ended up covered in stinging nettles and blackberry cuts.

If you do decide to take the longer rout, ignore that arrow on the barn and continue past the grand White House and take a left.

There are no signs or shade, and only one fountain. It’s along the road, and is very dangerous. There is no trail at all. 0/10, do not recommend.

Strongly recommend the alternate route! It’s stunning! The start is not very well marked but easy enough with this map. A super beautiful path!

Do not take the road route from Samos to Sarria! The road has no shoulder and the cars zoom past like a highway! We eventually turned off the road through the farmland, got lost, and added 6km to our journey. Take the marked route!
