Las Herrerias, and the conjoined hamlet of Hospital, are at the base of the mountain that has been lurking on the horizon for a few days.

At the end of town, just past Casa Polin, is a small picnic area and the Fuente de Quiñones (named after the famous jouster of Hospital de Órbigo).

Notice

A local service offers to take you to the top of the mountain on horseback, an alternative to the 6km ascent and a taste of what luxury would have felt like 900 years ago.

The Road

The climb begins as a gradual ascent along the paved road. The camino will eventually leave this road in favor of a footpath which descends to your left. Arrows at the turn-off indicate that the camino for cyclists remains on the road and if you are on a bike this is the preferred route. When the trail begins to climb again the path is rocky and steep and slick with mud and horse shit. Tread carefully and think happy thoughts.

I really enjoyed my stay. Really lovely place, good hot water. Good dinner- vegetarian. Solid breakfast. The place next door also has a pilgrims menu with chicken and a great bar with patio.

It’s 50 euros. Takes 2 hours. Leaves at 9am from Casa Lixa albergue. It was cool but I was wishing I had done the climb because it’s not bad and your body really does enjoy the push. Choose what’s best and book in advance!!

La vida es sueño y los sueños sueños son. Aprovecha y habla con Víctor de la vida y de los caballos, mientras correr en las nubes de Galicia.
Gracias Víctor, buen camino.

This place is comfortable enough. We had booked a private triple room. The toilets and bathroom are downstairs, which is quite inconvenient, especially at night when you have to walk through the dorm beds to use the loo!
No WiFi - you have to go to the Restuarant next door to use the WiFi.
We did not have dinner here.
They don't offer breakfast.

Horse ride to the top is 40€. Victor leaves at 9 and 4. I was debating whether to go or not so when, while we were riding, he told me work has been slow since the pandemic hit, I was happy to be helping local peoples businesses! The horses are well cared for and he stops to give them water during the climb.
Trip is about 2 hours.
