Castrojeriz is deceptively long — the camino follows the Calle Oriente through a town that seems to go on forever. Don't rush it. Three churches, a ruined castle, and a tunnel system connecting the cellars beneath the main street all reward a slower pace.

The Colegiata de Santa María del Manzano has a 13th-century Black Madonna. The Iglesia de Santo Domingo houses a tapestry museum. The Iglesia de San Juan, at the far end, has a beautiful cloister. All three are worth seeing.

The castle ruins on the hilltop above town provide the best view of the meseta you'll get from any direction — the climb is short but steep. From the top you can see the route ahead stretching west toward the Alto de Mostelares and, on a clear day, well into Palencia.

Several albergues, bars, and restaurants line the main street. A couple of small shops handle provisions. The town has more character than its size suggests — the length of the Calle Oriente and the quality of its buildings speak to medieval prosperity that the surrounding farmland no longer supports.

Fiesta

San Juan is celebrated on June 24. Santa Catalina on November 25-26.

History

Beneath the main street runs a tunnel system connecting the cellars of the houses on both sides. It was used for storage and, in times of trouble, as an escape route. The castle above dates to the Visigothic period and was rebuilt repeatedly by Moorish and Christian rulers. The town received its charter in the 10th century.

The Road

The road ahead climbs to the Alto de Mostelares — the highest point on the meseta section. There's little shade between here and the crossing into Palencia.

If you are craving a salad, this place has the best I’ve had on the Camino. Just vegetables with warm creamy (secret recipe) vinaigrette and toasted bread. And he is open in the afternoon while all other places are closed. Andres the owner also serves burgers and steaks. The interior dining room in the back is very cool as well as the back patio.

Such a clean, friendly place!
Jose helped us coordinate traveling by taxi today (injury) and went over and beyond helping us strategize our future plans. He was kind and caring… his wife prepares the communal meals which are deeeeelicious for 13 euros!

This is a great place to stay and enjoy for a night or two in a resort setting. Free laundry, foot pool, beautiful gardens, terrific snacks and a great dinner. The folks who work here are genuinely nice people! Room was fantastic.

The guy running the place was a real asshole too. I put the pictures on Reddit to confirm if it was bedbugs and every response said yes. The guy said they are not bedbugs and refused to do anything about it.

Not listed on Wise Pilgrim, but what an amazing place to stay. The host Beatriz made everyone so welcome and made us feel as though we were staying in her home rather than a pension. She cooked us a 4 course meal for 10€ each. Incredible hospitality.

Booked a private twin room here. Probably the nicest Albergue we have yet stayed on the Camino. Lovely room and friendly family run accommodation. We really enjoyed our evening communal meal. Even brought us more wine. Great place.

Wandered thru from Hontanas on the promise of an amazing breakfast. Sadly nothing was open.

A bar was apparently opening at 11am.

Stock up well.

Bonny, hungry town. It will try to break you!

Whilst albergue was fine the village was not. Nothing open from 12:30 - 8pm… nothing.

We could not get food or do anything.
Next time i would walk through this village & not stop for the evening
