Arzúa is the cheese capital of Galicia. The Queixo de Arzúa-Ulloa has its own Denominación de Orixe, and the tetilla cheese — named for its distinctive breast shape — is everywhere. The tetilla's form was supposedly created by cheesemakers in protest: when the bishop ordered the removal of nude figures from the Pórtico de la Gloria in Santiago, the cheesemakers responded by making their product unmistakably anatomical. The story may be apocryphal, but the cheese is real and excellent.

This is where the Camino del Norte joins the Francés, and the trail gets noticeably busier from here to Santiago. The town is functional and well-serviced: multiple albergues and hotels, bars and restaurants, supermarkets. If everything is full, the polideportivo (sports hall) is sometimes opened for overflow.

The camino leaves Arzúa on a footpath, not the road. From the main square, walk past the church (back to the road) and turn right.

Fiesta

The Festival of Cheese in March is a three-day celebration of the local product — 40 years running. Corpus Christi and Nuestra Señora del Carmen (July 16) are also celebrated.

History

Arzúa has been a waypoint on the pilgrim road since the earliest documented routes. Its position at the junction of the Francés and Norte routes made it a natural gathering point.

The Road

The camino leaves Arzúa along a footpath, NOT the road. If you arrived at the main square, walk past the church (with your back to the road) and turn right onto the side street. The terrain is pleasant, a blend of trails and paved roads through small towns and lots of forests. There are a few steep sections but none of any considerable length.

Decided to spend the night in Arzua after a hard day walking in the rain. Stayed at Penson Arcana which is just off the main street. It was a nice room where I was met by a sound gentleman on reception.. He helped me hang up all my wet clothes and even sorted my sodden boots in his drying room. The room was nice warm and spacious as was the shower. All for 35 euro it was great value. Niall

Luis the owner is the most warm and welcoming person. He has built a beautiful pensión with very nice rooms. They were the best beds we slept in on the Camino and the shower got very hot and had good water pressure. We woke up refreshed and rested and came out for breakfast and got to know Luis. He’s a wonderful person and really cares about his guests. He’s one of the angels of the Camino. We will stay here again on our next Camino!

By far one of the top places we’ve stayed at on our entire camino! We didn’t get a private room or anything! So clean and the bunk beds are separated with walls so you get some privacy every 1 or two bunks. So clean and friendly. The showers are very nice. There’s a very small kitchen as well. Never had a place with shoe driers either but they had one for two pairs at a time!

We had a wonderful dinner at this restaurant along the Camino with a beautiful view of the valley at 5pm!!! We are Americans and not used to eating late. Always looking for someplace to eat a dinner early. This place had great food and drink. They do not have a pilgrims menu so not inexpensive but still a good value. I would recommend. We tried a lot of different things, shrimp, pork cheeks, calamari, local cheese and two desserts. All delicious. The wine and also Licor de herbas and bebida de espirituosa were very good.

Agree with comment about best hotel on Camino! Better even than hotels I stayed at in San Sebastián and Madrid. Beautiful hotel, excellent service, lovely grounds and a pool, amazing dinner and breakfast. Maybe the only place I would want to stay a second day (although what would I DO in Arzua for a second day?). Highly recommend a splurge here!
