Portomarín

The last hamlet before the descent to the bridge at Portomarín.

The Road

The camino will soon bring you within sight of Portomarín. You will also pass through the town of Vilachá before beginning the rather steep descent into the valley of the río Miño and across the modern bridge to Portomarín.

The camino into town passes over the new bridge. The old bridge spends most of its time submerged beneath the river below but by the end of summer it emerges as the water level drops. Up the stairs and through the small chapel, you are almost into town. It is a bit more uphill still.

About 1-1.5km from Portomarin you will be given a choice of two paths into the town. On the road signs, it will show "principal route" and "alternative route". "Principal route corresponds to the purple route on this app. If your a casual hiker, and Ave fitness and me. Don't take the principal (purple on this app) route. It's dangerous and extremely steep. The last section is like climbing down an almost 90 degree outcrop of rocks. you have to climb down backwards (like climbing down a ladder) or sit down creep on your butt. It gets less steep but the path is big rocks that you can slip on and so narrow both feet fill the width of the path. It's basically mountain climbing. Would be impossible to do in the rain as you will have no grip on the steep rocks at all. Avoid "principal" route if you want to be safer.

There is a table laid out for tea and coffee. Fill the kettle with water and brew up. Donation tin provided. Wonderful!

I wanted to reserve a private room there yesterday for the end of May. I was only offered a room with dinner for €50 per person!! So the double room should cost 100€/night, a far cry from 47€. Then I decided not to make a reservation.

I had a great night here last night. The owners daughter prepared us a lovely dinner. She served and then joined us for dinner and shared in wonderful conversation. By far this was one of my favorite alberges.

While still steep. It is paved and shorter. The original way is rocky and very steep.
