Saint-Privat sits on a basalt promontory overlooking the Allier valley and marks a natural end to the first walking day from Le Puy. It's a proper village with a Romanesque church whose oldest sections date from the 12th century, and the ruins of a medieval castle on the cliff edge above the gorge. Walk to the viewpoint near the castle ruins. The view down into the Allier valley is spectacular and gives you a preview of what's coming.

Several gites and a couple of restaurants serve pilgrims, and you'll find a small grocery or depanneur. The village has a quiet, end-of-the-road feel despite its long history as a stopping point on the pilgrim route.

History

The castle ruins date from the 13th century. Saint-Privat controlled a strategic position above the Allier crossing and was fortified accordingly. The Romanesque church retains its original 12th-century elements, though it has been modified over the centuries.

The Road

From Saint-Privat, the character of the route changes dramatically. You leave the gentle plateau and enter the Gorges de l'Allier. The descent to Monistrol-d'Allier is steep, rocky, and about 350 m of elevation loss over roughly 6 km. It's the first real test of your knees.

The path drops to the hamlet of Rochegude, where there's a small chapel and the ruins of a tower, then descends more steeply through forest toward Pratclaux before plunging down to Monistrol-d'Allier in the gorge bottom. The trail is well-marked but uneven underfoot. Take your time, use your poles, and watch for loose rock.

I really love my stay here, good dinner, good breakfast.
It has chalet vibes, it has a wood stove to keep us warm on arrival, through the night and it helps dry the hanging laundry! I wish to find excellent accommodation like this one and I wish you all a buen camino <3

In Escargot dans da coquille. Walking to town, around the corner to the left from the charcuterie. I came in without reservations after a very long walk from Le Puy with nothing open the entire way until here. They had great food and a warm comfy bed. Catherine and Philippe were very welcoming… breakfast was plenty for another long trip..

As I look back on my photos, I have to give Phillipe and Caroline the award for best gite meal of my 3-week Camino! This is an excellent gite, clean and well organized. Clean pilgrims’ kitchen, but don’t cook - by all means dine with these wonderful chefs. Thank you!

Philippe and Catherine are friendly and pilgrims. Great advice and stories about the chemin.
Food is outstanding made with local products. Bedrooms are clean, and so are the bathrooms and showers. Thoroughly recommend this gem.

Do not stop. The owner is not respectful and should do a different job…..with no customer!!

I showed up to L'espace gite and was horrified. It's a construction zone with unfinished rooms and tools lying everywhere. The mattress wasnt wrapped. Above all there were no doors installed anywhere, not the WC or the shower or the bedroom itself. As a single woman i was extremely uncomfortable and the owner seemed very pushy. He asked what i wanted for dinner, an omelet? For 15 euros, no. He said i had to buy dinner or I couldn't stay. He yelled at me when I moved to get water from the sink in the cluttered kitchen and said he could lose his license if the inspectors saw me in there...

i was panicking but thankfully called another gite down the road L'estou which had tons of beds available and were hosting my friend. They were wonderful.
