At 1,335 m, the Alto do Poio is the highest point on the Galician section of the Camino Francés. A bar-restaurant operates here, and a large stone monument marks the spot. The descent from here is long and steady, dropping over 700 m to Triacastela.

The owner is only interested in your money.
Food is awful.
Toilets and showers a disgrace.
I was pleased that I checked the place out before paying to stay.

7€ for a huge chunk of excellent tortilla and a large fresh orange juice at lunch on a monday. 10-20 pilgrims stopping during the hour I was there.

Bonus (? ymmv) extra large friendly dog hoping for pets and handouts.

We were charged 15 euros for what would be 10 anywhere it’s wasn’t just pilgrims as customers. We’ve encountered many of these places along the Camino - ex: 3 euros for a tea that’s 1.40 anywhere where Spaniards go. No posted prices of course. Sometimes it seems the Camino is just an economic stimulus plan for rural areas to shake down foreigners

La dame a demandé 8 euros malgré le fait que sur cette application, c'est noté 6.
Elle m'a répondu très vite en espagnol. Donc rien à faire.
Je ne recommande pas cet endroit...

I am currently on the alternative route just out of Alto do Poio. It is magnificent. Take the normal roadside for approximately 500 or so. Watch on the right for the directions for the 2 routes. One continues down the road, one seems to go backwards up a hill. It only does this for a very short time and the uphill soon levels out and turns back to the left. It is magnificent. Good road, well marked with the Camino signs on the cement blocks. Birds are singing, dew sparklingly on the trees and ferns. Views magnificent. I think it rejoins at Fonfria. I am only one here at the moment with the birds.

… after Alto do Poio is really nice. There is a hill you have to climb in the beginning but after that it’s really lovely. Saw no other people, it’s quiet and very beautiful. This route meets the original one in the next town.

Beautiful route that gets you away from the highway on a nice soft path through trees and natural scrub.

Camino de Sant…

There is a good alternative and waymarked route right af Alto do Poio. A quiet and safe path that os not physically challenging. I recommend this route if you want to avoid asphalt and cars. Go right at the sign that says C. Complimentario
