Santalla del Bierzo is a small village just past the mirador. There's a grocery store in the center of town. The camino leaves the highway and goes through a village street.

Notice

When leaving town, there are two sets of arrows and a mojón. Follow the arrows toward Villavieja — do not follow the arrows to Las Barrancas.

The Road

Calle Chaos takes you out of town, turning to a dirt path. After walking through fields and orchards for a couple of kilometers, a mojón directs you left across the national highway, where an ascent begins. There's a sign for the Villavieja Albergue.

You can stay on the road and bypass the castle, going directly to Borrenes with minimal elevation gain — but walking on the shoulder of a national highway isn't recommended. The camino route through Villavieja is far preferable, with great views of the castle on the climb.

A villager pointed us to the bar Ronda on the main road. We walked a very short distance to find the exterior tables all stacked up and nobody around. There was no indication of hours they might be open. It's not far off the Camino so maybe worth a try, but don't count on it.

Passing through the village we did not find a grocery store. (Which was confirmed by the lady in the restaurant) Also the bar mentioned in here does not seem to exist (anymore?) instead there is a restaurant called La estrategia del Caracol and there seems to be a bar at the Main Street above town called Ronda (we didn’t go there so cannot confirm)

Really cute restaurant run by some lovely people. Great interior decor and charming vibe. The opening hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday (and holidays) 1-5pm only! Delicious food. It looks like they specialize in Paella and have great variations on their menu but due to our dietary restrictions we did not try them (you have to order it for at least 2 people)
