Castillo de Cornatel

Villavieja is a pretty hamlet that was once home to the serfs who worked in the castle above. It has a spring-fed fountain and the Iglesia de Santiago. Other than the albergue, there are no services — if you plan to stay here, carry your own food.

The setting is peaceful, with chestnut trees and views up to the castle ruins.

The Road

Halfway through Villavieja, there's a paved road to the right that bypasses the castle. The camino to the castle goes to the left of a large renovated house, on a gravel path through chestnut trees.

You get sheets for the bed (including a thin sheet), and a blanket is already on your bed. WiFi is available, a washer and dryer is also available for no extra charge. Kitchen is fully equipped.

Bring food from Ponferrada!!! Also plan on food for the next day - I couldn’t find anything open until I already walked 21km the next day!!

The large dog was loose this morning. We had to use our poles to scare it off. It tried attacking us. The owner saw us on the Camino near the castle and he apologized. He said that he keeps the dog put away during the busier season.
