The Cruz de Ferro (1,505 m) is the highest point on the Camino Francés and one of its most iconic moments. A simple iron cross stands on a tall wooden pole atop a cairn of stones — stones left by pilgrims, each carrying whatever weight the bearer chose to assign it.

The tradition is old and the practice is straightforward: carry a stone from home (or pick one up along the way), add it to the pile, and leave behind whatever you need to leave behind. Some pilgrims treat it as a profound spiritual moment. Others toss a pebble and move on. The cairn doesn't judge.

Arrive early if you want solitude. By mid-morning on busy days the site can be crowded with pilgrim groups. At dawn, with mist on the mountain and nobody else around, it's one of those places that earns every word ever written about it.

A small ermita — the Ermita de Santiago — sits just below the cross.

Foncebadon is much closer, but if you stay in Rabanal, you get the benefit of the coral service done by the Benedictine monks there. In the US we call that a double hitter.

It takes two hours to get to the Cruz Ferro. For me, in September, I got up and was on the road by six and made it there in plenty of time. Your weather app will tell you when first light is and win, sunrise is

If you can do it, I highly recommend you arrive by sunrise where it is simply gorgeous, and of course, there are no crowds

Staying in Foncebadon makes it easier to get to the cross early. Leave your burdens at the base of the cross. No facilities. Be extra careful going down to town from there. Beautiful route!

Camino de Sant…

Recommend bringing a rock from home and leaving it here to release whatever it represents. There was a lineup of pilgrims wanting pictures, just wait your turn and take your moment.

Camino de Sant…

If you want to walk to Cruz de Ferro to watch the sunrise from there, sleep in Foncebadon. If you sleep in Rabanal, you will take 2h to reach Cruz de Ferro and the way is through the forest which isn’t easy and nice in the dark.

Camino de Sant…

If you want to see the sunrise the ideal spot is on the trail to Cruz de Ferro and not at the cross itself
