The hotels are along the main road, which is noisy and dangerous — suitable as a last resort but best avoided. After crossing the bridge, take a left on the first street and follow the zigs and zags uphill. The camino provides a welcome break from road traffic between here and O Pobo.

History

The Battle of Pontesampaio in 1809 was a key engagement of the Peninsular War. Local Galician militia, aided by a force under Pablo Morillo, destroyed the bridge to prevent the French retreat, trapping and defeating a significant portion of Marshal Ney's forces. The bridge has been rebuilt but the battle is commemorated in the town.

The Road

After crossing the bridge, take a left turn on the first street. This turn is followed by a series of zigs and zags that take you up and through town at the highest point. The camino takes a welcome break from the road traffic between here and O Pobo.

On the north side of the bridge a great spot to watch the world go by and it’s a long way to the next spot

O Meson is a really new, clean place. We actually took the bus here from Pontevedra because everything was full! Highly recommend! As of August 2019, it is 12 Euros

For those of you,who are planning to stay in beautiful Arcade few km before Pontevedra,I would like to recommend newly opened albergue. Located few meters(I think 200m) from camino. Very friendly staff, great equipped, with everything we needed. Price was very good for what we get - we did not book in advance. There is a restaurant nearby, where you get breakfast, lunch or dinner with discount. Good food for good price and amazing wine. We were only 2 there as it is opened first few days. I wish them luck and I can trully recommend,we were very satisfied.

Contrary to the comments that this is noisy, we found Las Islas charming and since our room was on the water - very quiet. Being right on the water it reminded us of our home State of Queensland. This is bit off the track, but I would recommend it for it’s clean room, water view and helpful staff.

Can also really recommend to stay in Pontesampaio and at albergue O Meson. Cute little relaxed village. The albergue is super fresh, clean, nice beds, friendly host!
