Notice

The new boardwalk out of Mindelo has been completed and you no longer need to take the red alternate route.

The Road

There are two ways from Mindelo to Ávore, one along the waterfront and one inland.  In recent years the waterfront option has become sand-swept, making it difficult for cyclists.

We can confirm that the new Boardwalk is complete and a wonderful walk. No need to take the detour.

The new boardwalk is completely open, you can see remnants of the old one in a few places. Beautiful!

They’re still working on the boardwalk but it’s less than 100 meters you walk over a sand path.

Boardwalk closed but I still went anyway. Just go on the sand beside the boardwalk. Not a problem

We loved Bombordo’s in Mindelo. Good, tasty food, beer and wine… and a morning americano. Friendly, good service and a spectacular coastal location. Highly recommended.

Boardwalk is still out, but there is a signed detour through sand/dirt tracks a bit further inland which is longer than the boardwalk

When you get to the start of the boardwalk as you enter Mindelo, it is closed from the other side of Mindelo. If you continue you will
Need to course correct. Unlike the previous closure a little way back, here there are no signs until you go to far.. it’s an easy fix and the town is a great place to stop for lunch.

The boardwalk is now closed. They are adding sand barriers. You will need to switch to the other coastal route

Camino de Sant… (not verified)

As of June 2023, approximately 1km of boardwalk is still out of service. Short sand walks are required.

The boardwalk from Gafa to Ávore is out about halfway in between. Additionally, sand dunes have consumed whole sections of the boardwalk, which is now 1.5m under the sand in some places. This makes it very difficult for anyone traveling with wheels, particularly strollers.
