Castro Marim is a pleasant town boasting a 13th-century castle, a more recent military fortress and a restored windmill.

The Road

Leaving town, an alternate route that becomes a dirt path among pine trees with nice views over the countryside is preferable to the official camino. It’s shared with the GR15 hiking trail, so look for the red and white striped markings.

Camino de Sant… (not verified)

Just to note that if you follow the path marked on the app, there is a dearth of yellow arrows as you leave Castro Marim. If you follow the red and white GR markers however you come to Monte Francisco and the yellow arrows reappear.

Camino de Sant… (not verified)

Well worth a short detour to the castle at Castro Marim. Only €1.10 entry. There is a church dedicated to Santiago inside the castle walls and there is a view over to Spain.
