Attenzione

If you are like me and really enjoy going to a donativo and donating as much as you’d be expecting to pay for a bed at a municipal and a separate dinner, then you will get for free a heartwarming experience and a special night. I try to stay in donativos wherever I can just because the caring and heart of the host is incredibly inspiring every time. Well worth the walk for the views alone!

The Albergue and Sandra are really worth a visit. But as someone else already commented: When you do not understand the concept of a donativo and expect a hotel or feel entitled to anything - stay away and pay for a hotel room elsewhere. If however you are grateful that someone takes care of such a place without pay, even prepares a meal for you and gives you a warm welcome, then come and donate whatever you think responsible and affordable.

Well worth the stop. The hospitalera said that in recent times she’d encountered a few people who weren’t happy - I’m guessing they’d previously stayed in private accommodation and hotels. So here’s what you get, to clear up expectations:

1) a decent bed for the night
2) a fridge stocked with drinks, plus bottled water and wine
3) bread, butter, jam, fruit, biscuits/cookies etc, tea, coffee and herbal teas as much as you’d like (there was even Yorkshire tea)
4) we received two “family” style meals - home cooked food. Simple but tasty.
5) washing machine (I used the extra spin cycle to ensure everything dried)

Better than most of the municipals, but obviously not up to the standards of a hotel and a restaurant meal! The most important thing was the amazing welcome.

When leaving Herias you climb a hill leaving the village. Be very careful after about 200m there is a very small opening on your right, which isn't very clearly marked. This is the way to Campomanes, down a very steep descent.
