The Road

Stayed there only one night and it was terrific. We arrived too late for them to prepare a dinner meal ( They need a certain amount of people to have time to prepare). However, breakfast the next morning was fantastic and the hosts are gracious. The bath towels were large and fluffy, which I really appreciated!

The Cruz de Ferro was moving for us, even a bit emotionally draining. Then the path down from the Alta took a toll on knees and ankles, so we took a rest day. Great call! We stayed at Casa San Nicolas and all the wonderful reviews are all true.

The place is spotless, the food (breakfast and dinner) are superb and the hosts are truly amazing. It was a great blessing to stay with them.

Tim, who opens the church, is a man of great insight. Take a few minutes to chat with him. This town was truly an oasis of rest in the midst of the Camino.

This was one of our favorite stops on the Camino because of the lovely owners and the wonderful Brazilian dinner they prepared for the guests! Breakfast was also very nice. A special spot to be sure!

A big shout out to the boys from Crepe and Roll. It’s a kiosk in funky gardens up at the river end (you’ll hear the music). We’ve just had a delicious burger and crepe.

There is an American who lives here and opens the church everyday except monday at five o clock.

Unless you want to bypass Ponferrada completely, stay on the wide sidewalk on the main road. The Camino turns left outside of Ponferrada and goes thru Campos and then through some trash and graffiti ridden residential areas interspersed with weed choked vacant lots. The road has no shoulder and the traffic is fairly heavy. You completely bypass Ponferrada and have to backtrack into town if you want to go to a restaurant, use an ATM, see the castle or spend the night.
