Laissant derrière elle la province de Gipuzkoa, Markina-Xemein est la première ville digne d'intérêt en Viscaya.

La ville compte un certain nombre de monuments, notamment grâce au chemin de pèlerinage.

Ils sont le Convento e Iglesia de la Merced, Santa María de la Asunción de Jeméin, et San Miguel de Arretxinaga. Si tu ne dois en visiter qu'une, fais-la San Miguel, l'église hexagonale a été construite autour d'une formation rocheuse mégalithique qui domine l'intérieur et elle répond à la définition même d'unique.

Tout aussi vénérés (par les Basques) sont les courts de frontón à deux côtés où les hommes viennent jouer au jai alai (fête joyeuse en basque). Ici, le tribunal municipal a produit tant de joueurs de renommée internationale qu'il a gagné le surnom d'université de la pelote.

Le jour du marché est le jeudi, sur la Plaza del Mercado.

Juin : San Juan est fêté le 24 et San Pedro le 29.

Juillet : San Martín le 7, San Cristóbal le 10 et San Ignacio de Loyola le 31.

Août : Goerria le 1er, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves le 5, et San Jacinto le 17.

Septembre : Nuestra Señora de Erdotza le 8 et San Miguel Arcángel le 29.

Octobre : Santa Teresa de Jesús le 15.

The Road

Le camino marqué passe devant l'église et le couvent et tourne à droite à la première rue après eux. Suis la route qui traverse une petite rivière et tourne à gauche à la première route, en restant près du bâtiment voisin pour suivre un sentier du parc qui se faufile le long de la rivière. Le camino te ramènera au-dessus de la rivière (bien qu'elle soit couverte, tu ne le remarqueras peut-être pas) et ensuite sous le BI-633. Il suit une rivière plus petite, passe devant un parc industriel et entre dans Iruzubieta.

Was open before the stated opening time of 3pm and filled up fast. Was full by 5pm, however the hospitaleros will put mattresses on the floor to avoid turning people away.

There’s a mass that pilgrims can attend at 7.30pm.

There are jugs of water, a kettle, fridge, microwave & common room.

There are single beds as well as bunk beds and lockers for each bed (which is numbered). Make sure you have a 1€ coin for the locker - you get it back.

There is also wifi and details of a laundromat in town if you need to do a load.
It’s old but it’s a donativo and it’s perfectly adequate for a pilgrims’ needs with friendly hospitaleros (Spanish/Basque speaking only).

It was 15€ for a bed, 14€ for dinner (they had two separate dinner times 19:30 and 20:30), and 4€ for breakfast. They’ve got nice outside areas to relax with good views, all of the amenities you could expect from an albergue, and the people who run it are very nice. Beds have a bottom sheet and pillow with a case along with a thick blanket/comforter. I just used a sleeping bag liner instead for a sheet. I was able to walk up just after 15:00 without a reservation but I thought I overheard one say over the phone that they were full for tomorrow so maybe make a reservation?

Stayed at intxauspe which is lovely, only thing is it doesn't have a kitchen pilgrims can use and if you leave sthg in the fridge need to take it out at night or wait until they come in the morning. There's a bar and they offer a nice dinner and breakfastas well.

Funny little town. We stayed at CasaRural (Intxauspe) which is cheaper (€15) for Pilgrims. Lovely albergue, no dinner but good breakfast and town only a short walk away.
