We weren’t sure we were going to leave Roncesvalles today. So yesterday we went to the monastery to ask if we could stay on our way back from SJPdP to Santiago and Santiago to SJPdP and were told the monastery is only for pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela. And we said well we went to Santiago and now are at the end of our journey and want to stay tomorrow. No was the answer it’s only for pilgrims. My definition of a pilgrimage is a journey of thoughtful intention with an unknown outcome.

Very clean and organized. You don’t feel like you’re in a place with 200 beds. Laundry facility is excellent. Make sure you have an eye mask and ear plugs.

You can book this albergue online in advance and I highly recommend it.
The check in takes some time. The Dutch volunteer Hospitaleros are efficient and nice.
The beds are very clean and verkaufe the Bunk beds are arranged in like cubicles of 4 beds it does not feel like you share a dorm with 80 people.
The pilgrims mass was a nice experience.
They have a washing service and a hand wash station with a manual dryer that you can use for free.
Dinner was ok but not great.
Breakfast was nice with cake, toast, cheese and ham, orange juice and jam

A great place to stay. It wasn’t full so plenty of quiet time. The Hospitaleros couldn’t do enough for you especially the laundry volunteers. Nothing is too much for all of them in helping you. 2nd time I stayed there and it’s a really nice experience. Waking up to music at 6:00am was lovely too.

The woman who checked us in was the most uncaring and inhospitable Hospitalera - completely inflexible and unwelcoming. No sympathy for people on the verge of hypothermia. She’s in the wrong job. Laundry service was amazing and food ok.You need a good breakfast to fortify you for the slippery and dangerous descent into Zubiri. Don’t believe the km signs. When it is wet and muddy the last section is scary.

The Dutch volunteers are excellent.
Check-in, however, can be disorganised chaos when it’s busy — with seven people managing the queue and only one person doing the actual check-in.
That said, once you’re checked in, everything is great. It’s very comfortable.

Note that blankets are no longer provided, but sleeping bags and blankets are available for purchase. If you look it up, you’ll see that more and more albergues are phasing out blanket provision.

Dinner and breakfast were good — typical pilgrim food and very social — but be aware that the dining location is quite a distance from the albergue.

We waited for an hour to check in and people after us had to wait 2 hours! very disorganised though the volunteer hospitaleros were v helpful. Otherwise fine - ask for 3rd floor if possible as no bunk beds so much more space.

Just don’t understand the appeal of this place after two negative experiences. Very controlling in a weird way. No warmth to how they operate. Maybe they should focus on a smaller experience for the guests? 14€ for bed, 7€ laundry, also offer takeaway snack for next day, and dinner at fixed times at local places which may leave you unable to attend pilgrim’s mass :/. Incredibly difficult to climb those bunk ladders with seemingly no consideration given to age of guest. Reasonably clean, beds are comfy.

I stayed there Sept 19th 2024. I knew there were going to be a lot of us but it was so well organised and so many helpers on hand that it was no problem at all and I really enjoyed staying here. I was glad I had pre booked as I got a bed in a cubicle beside just one person. A friend who hadn't made a reservation got a less comfortable top bunk in the overflow area. Dinner and breakfast was good, no complaints there. Enjoyed sitting at large tables and meeting other pilgrims.
