Die Iglesia de Santa María war einst ein Krankenhaus für PilgerInnen. Diese mussten wie die heutigen zwischen zwei Routen nach Westen wählen. Pepe, der Hospitalero der städtischen Albergue gibt jeden Abend um 19h eine Wegbeschreibung für die folgenden Tage. Denken Sie daran, dass Pepe Teil der Gruppe war, die die Route über Ballota markierte, weshalb er etwas voreingenommen scheint. Wählen Sie die Variante, die am besten zu Ihnen passt.

Wenn Sie früh ankommen könnten Sie auch die 2 km zum Strand gehen (Wegweiser).

The Road

Von Soto de Luiña aus gibt es zwei verschiedene Routen. Beide sind gut markiert und die Abzweigung ist offensichtlich. Sie kommt entlang der Straße und es gibt einen Wegweiser mit zwei Muscheln welche die Richtungen anzeigen.

Variante 1: Bergroute – 19,9 km

Diese Route ist zur Gänze eine Bergwanderung und weit und breit die landschaftlich schönste Option. Wie der Name schon sagt, führt sie auf und entlang des Bergrückens. Wenn Sie diese Route gewählt haben, sollten Sie genügend Essen und Wasser einpacken, es gibt unterwegs keine Dienstleistungen. An der Stelle wo sich der Camino teilt, biegt die Bergroute links ab und beginnt anzusteigen.

Variante 2: Ballota Route – 19,5 km

Obwohl diese Route keine großen Höhen erreicht, macht sie doch viele Höhenmeter auf und ab; sie ist im Wesentlichen eine lange Reihe von Haarnadelkurven, die parallel zur Straße verlaufen. Ein Wort der Vorsicht ist angebracht. Da diese Route häufig die Straße berührt, ist es notwendig auf alle Pfeile zu achten, die Sie wieder davon wegführen. Obwohl man auch auf der Straße ans Ziel kommt, wäre es viel weiter und viel mehr auf und ab als am Camino. Es gibt einige Dienstleistungen auf dieser Route. Um ihr zu folgen, bleiben Sie einfach bei der Abzweigung auf der Straße.

Escolhemos a montanha hoje e não nos arrependemos. Os caminhos foram recentemente limpos e a caminhada é fácil apesar da chuva intensa. As vistas e a paisagem foram espectaculares. Um dos meus estágios favoritos do Norte até agora.
Pontos a notar. O tempo de montanha pode mudar, então prepare-se para mau tempo.
Não tente se não estiver preparado para algumas subidas íngremes. É principalmente uma trilha florestal de cascalho com alguns caminhos cobertos de grama ou estreitos conforme sobe e desce do topo.
Algumas das marcas do caminho estão faltando, então certifique-se de seguir o mapa no Wise Pilgrim que mostra facilmente o caminho.

É um dia cansativo, mas não é tecnicamente difícil e muito gratificante. Sou uma pequena mulher de 58 anos com uma mochila de 8 kg e me virei bem.

Sem cobras ou carrapatos, mas vi uma marta.

Fiz a rota hoje, céu limpo, quente e com brisa, portanto boas condições de montanha. Não tive muita dificuldade em seguir a trilha, mas não é bom que tanta gente sinta necessidade de roubar os azulejos de direção dos postes marcadores. No topo, sugiro que você suba todo o caminho até à torre, há um caminho do outro lado. Ao descer (em direção ao oeste) aproximadamente 2 km do topo, verá uma trilha de largura de veículo à esquerda e os mapas Wise Pilgrim mostram ir direto e subir uma colina, isto é incorreto, vá para a esquerda e à sua direita verá um marcador de trilha.

No local onde a trilha cruza a Carretera Cortina - Cadaveu, os marcadores e setas indicam subir a colina por uma trilha de arbustos, que não é mantida e está muito coberta de vegetação. Sugiro seguir a estrada conforme indicado no Wise Pilgrim

Os anfitriões da albergue mencionaram que a estrada de montanha está atualmente fechada devido a um deslizamento de terra. Você precisa tomar a rota costeira no momento.

Depois de ter lido outros comentários recentes sobre o caminho de montanha, hesitei em seguindo-o, mas depois de o ter completado, posso dizer que acredito que vale a pena fazer este trekking. Muitas pessoas descreveram experiências ruins nesta secção, mas o único incómodo que experimentei foi algo presente no resto de El Camino Del Norte: lama. Há bastante lama na segunda metade desta caminhada, mas é aceitável. Quanto à dificuldade, eu a compararia com muitas caminhadas que fiz nos Apalaches da Virgínia, Virgínia Ocidental e Pensilvânia. Se gostam de caminhadas ao longo de cristas com vistas magníficas, esta é uma caminhada para vós. Eu até diria que é provavelmente mais fácil nos pés do que foram as outras secções pavimentadas. Se os vossos pés vos têm incomodado por causa do pavimento como os meus, isto dá-lhes um descanso e definitivamente trabalha mais as vossas pernas superiores. No geral, cabe a vós, mas se usarem um pouco de bom senso, não é nada mau, e deu-me algumas das minhas fotos favoritas da viagem.

I took the mountain route. I am a solo hiker, very capable and confident. Today was a sunny day, no rain in the forecast. However, the mountain route climbed up and up and up. The higher I climbed, the more I went into the fog and grey skies, ultimately ending in rain when I reached the peak. Also, the farther I went into the route, the more signs were missing where the route splits up, so it was a guessing game if I was choosing the right path. I had my offline map, but it was STILL difficult to tell where to go. Absolutely TERRIFYING to be miles and miles from civilization, extremely unclear signage, overgrown paths covered in mud streams in the pouring rain on the side of a mountain with poor visibility. AND SNAKES. I saw 2. After weeks on the Norte, today was the first time I genuinely felt unsafe. I would never do this hike again. No to mountain route!

After a long stage on the way we saw the cat in the window, Limon guesthouse (Limon was one of theirs cats).
The town is small but you have everything you could need. Relaxing in the garden listening to the river is priceless. The owners helped us with everything and we were even able to make lemonade with the lemons from the garden. Outstanding price quality. Thank you Gonzalo and Iratxe for your hospitality

i just did the coastal route and it was a great experience with stunning views, beautiful nature paths in fairytale forests, pitoresque countrysides..very colorful mixed landscapesituations. it is often up and down a bit, but not steep and so very pleasant to walk. some parts are on serpentine roads, but there was not a lot (almost none) traffic the 2 days i was walking the coastal route.
i was happy that i had my walking sticks, cause in the forests were about 3 situations i had to balance over a small and not really dangerous river/trickle on stones.

i don't know about any pilgrim in my timeframe who did the mountain route. one elderly pilgrim started walking it by mistake but turned around after he felt like he's the only pilgrim and after a spanish passenger told him he shouldn't walk it, cause too dangerous.

Limón guest house gives you a room for yourself when the price is 25euros. And with a clean shared bathroom, kitchen, living room, it’s really cozy and highly recommend. Llater that night, grab some really good hamburger at the bar call La tasca de Rosa. Just so good.

Mountain route is extremely overgrown. You do have an option to go around the waist high grass. After rain the day before, the very narrow and poorly maintained path was a river. If there is any risk of rain, fog, or just clouds, there are no views. Not worth the extra time and slow going to navigate with the lack of markers and low trail visibility, only to have to walk on a highway at the end of it all.
