- Olivier

Gracias por todo, Olivier!

If you have other options, I would avoid the albergue here in Riego de Ambros. Olivier was grumpy and combative when I arrived.

He gave me a very hard time about having a lower bunk, even though the albergue was less than half full last night. There were enough lower bunks to go around for everyone.

He told me off in front of other pilgrims for “taking too long” in the shower, even though there was nobody else waiting for one of the two available showers. He even said “I think you must’ve fallen asleep in there because you took so long.” I ran the water for less than five minutes during my entire shower.

He made fun of me for only getting stamps on one side of my credencial so that I can frame it when I get home and see all my sellos. “People frame their compostelas, not their credencials,” he said. Not that it’s any of his business, nor did I ask his opinion.

He argued with me about my knee injury, saying “You have a knee injury but here you are walking the Camino and walking 20 km every day.” Again, not his business to ask about my injury or judge me.

If he was trying to joke about all of these things, then those jokes came across very flat. He didn’t seem to be acting like this with any of the other pilgrims. I was the only American there. Maybe he just doesn’t like people from the US.

This was definitely my worst albergue of my Camino, and I have enjoyed every single one I have been in. Maybe Olivier was just having a bad day, but I really, really disliked this place. I wish I had stayed in El Acebo.

I’d like to add that I have enough Spanish that I am able to make reservations, tell people where I’m from, order dinner, ask for the bill, and make basic conversation. I am a curious and respectful traveler.

Some of the path from El Acebo through to Molinesca is rocky and shaley; care and poles are needed. I came a cropper and ended up with stitches in my hand and knee. Helpful doctor in Molinesca and some very helpful pilgrims were by my side. Hoping to be okay in a few days to resume some of My Walk.

The woman seemed too busy to wait on us whenever we tried to order or ask for something else. The food was very expensive. She talked with another table and laughed about americans. I would have rather gone without dinner.🫤

Disappointing to stay at Acebo . Town pretty well seems to be owned by a corporate business interested in the Euro not the Pilgrim. Not a friendly attitude to those staying.

Closed Monday (just so you know), this bar/restaurant is an absolute stand out for me on the Camino. I asked the owner what he recommended I eat for dinner, and he recommended a lamb skewer with an amazing garlic and herb marinade and salad. It came with delicious bread reminiscent of sourdough. Washed down with a house red wine and then one from Rioja, plus a bonus shot of the yellow/green liquor I've seen around, and I was well and truly sated. Guess who'll be snoring in the albergue tonight?! Alissa, that's who.
