I consider myself to be in good shape, but walking the entire GR121 route to Deba was terrifying. It’s lots of steep uphills and equally rocky downhills, with paths not always clearly marked. If you walk this route, you 100% need poles. It’s gorgeous but, again, challenging.

I would add a warning to the guide. The coastal route although beautiful is very difficult and was quite scary for me in some sections. If I hadn’t held on to the flimsy wire fence, I would have fell and slid all the way down. Even at the trailhead (after you’re done) it gives a huge warning to proceed at your own risk.

After the second N 634 crossing on the wooded uphill trail there is a big logging operation upslope of the trail on the right side. A tree fell and almost took out some pilgrims as it landed ahead of them blocking the trail. They had to wait for logging crew to chainsaw and clear the route.

There are caution signs as you approach the area but be very aware.

Please make sure you have enough food and water until Deba as there is no bar here. There is a food truck earlier (at a car park) that’s worth considering.

Camino de Sant…

There was not an open restaurant/bar in this small town. Luckily there was a small food truck by the camping area where the red meets blue that we could go back to and grab some snacks.

The app shows there is food here. There is a bar however it is “Privado”. It looks like a bar and Spanish people were drinking and eating and a small van full of beer kegs delivered about 150 bottles of St Miguel and Schweppes tonic water, However either they don’t like tourists/pilgrims or it is a co op type arrangement for local farmers. I echo above comments about food truck 500M back up trail, though not inspiring. Suggest buy bread / cheese in previous town. Fortunately we bought Bino Tinto there and had cigarettes. Sat enjoying them on bench opposite pub. Nice.

Camino de Sant…

Camino Dragon: After the cider place you come to a motorway. There is a small pub. Basic but nice. If you ask for a bocadillo they will do you one no hassle. Tastes pretty good. Also Vino Blanco. Not many customers and seems a bit random but nice rustic wooden tables with sunshades outside if you like and tiled interior. Make sure you can order in Spanish.

Camino de Sant…

ATTENTION!!! Don’t follow the red way if you are not fit enough , have a heavy backpack and if you don’t have poles with you. very dangerous and very difficult path. For proper hikers! Fox
