Le Puerto de Pajares est l'un des rares cols de montagne qui, pendant des siècles, a offert un passage par-dessus les montagnes vers les Asturies depuis la meseta. Il est resté le principal couloir jusqu'à la construction de la A-66 à l'ouest. Il reste une route difficile pour les conducteurs et la neige n'est pas trop rare ici en juin.

L'ancien parador a ouvert son bar et de l'autre côté de la route, Venta Casimiro a reconstruit après un incendie... c'est le bar "de siempre". Parador pour la vue, Venta pour l'âme et un vrai repas.

The Road

Le camino quitte la route principale pour suivre un sentier derrière quelques fermes à l'extrémité de l'alto ; si tu es allé jusqu'à l'ancien Parador, tu devras revenir un peu en arrière et éviter la tentation de suivre la route. Au niveau des bâtiments agricoles, tourne à droite et entame une douce montée jusqu'à la frontière entre León et les Asturies. Là, tu devras passer un portail et redescendre jusqu'à la route nationale que tu aurais dû éviter (elle est vraiment très dangereuse). Ici, tu dois traverser la route (ATTENTION) pour reprendre le sentier qui descend vers Pajares.

NOTE : Sur le chemin de Pajares, tu trouveras un embranchement qui t'oblige à décider entre Pajares ou San Miguel. L'itinéraire passant par San Miguel arrivera également à Pajares, mais il prend 5 km de plus et n'est donc vraiment recommandé qu'aux cyclistes ou aux pèlerins qui ont l'intention de dormir à Bendueños (1,5 km en dehors du camino).

There’s now a dirt road to walk down instead of bushwhacking through the ferns behind the farm buildings. I only know this because someone was walking down the new road while I was bushwhacking. I assume there is a Camino sign at the road. It’s well before you get to the bar and farm houses. The gate you go through will be on your left. It’s signed. Also, stay to the left when you descend to the road. The double gate by the road is at the far left and you might be able to get to it without walking through the deep mud in the cow pasture.

The trail on the other side of the road is steep and sketchy. Take your time and walk carefully. When you get into the forest you will find a Camino shell on your left. Turn sharply left there and follow the mud steeply down to the obvious stream crossing. You should see a large arrow on the ground on the other side of the stream. Once you’re out of the forest and happily on a dirt road again, keep your eyes peeled for a path on the left with a hard to see Camino sign a little ways down the path on the right.

I found today’s route finding a bit challenging. Luckily, someone was always nearby (or left boot prints) to help out.
