Wegbeschreibung

Variante 2: Der alte Camino - 14.8 km

(not verified)

The “short route” is dangerous. I hitchhiked to Castro Urdiales because of the hills and sharp curves, with no space for pedestrians, just felt unwise. They should at least add a die walk for pilgrims.

Albergue Tu Camino was great. Average facility, but the hosts were great and the spirit of the Camino was super. I have not really experienced that spirit on the Norte thus far.

The new main camino route (N634, option 1) is dangerous. Poorly marked, no safe road shoulder to walk in many sections, multi highway intersections with no safe way to cross. The good...we survived and it is shorter than the original route.

It's a nice walk, very few cars and people, with one long climb that's not steep though. Didn't see any bars or anything really (fountain, shop, etc) until santullán.

Always on the road, often with no space for pedestrians, cars driving fast. I was scared most of the time. For me it was the worst part of el camino since Irun. I would definitely NOT recommand this option.

Lovely albergue. Donativo dinner is one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. Highly recommend staying here.

Camino de Sant…

Friendly hospitalero, option to buy drink from his source. Alberque is quite tinny, no space around a very close to frequented road. 7€ bed, dinner donativo, breakfast 3€

Camino de Sant…

Guten Tag, leider macht die Herberge erst ab 1. April auf.

Camino de Sant…

The N634 is short by almost half, and the description says coastal, which it technically is, but it is scary! The Camino is on the asphalt roadway, with virtually no shoulder and blind curves. If you can't see the cars (and there were many), they can't see you! In addition, where there is a run off at times for water that you can walk in, there was tons of tree debris (leaves, branches, dirt), refuse and clay rocks. A couple in a car actually stopped to offer us a ride because they thought we were lost. It's not great. We would suggest taking Option 2, the older Camino trail.

Camino de Sant…

I read the comments here, so I took the longer route which was a very welcome departure from the busy road - walking though nature on a almost deserted forest road for the first half, and on a pleasant bike path the other. Others who I met later said the shorter option wasn’t as bad though, so I guess it depends how much time you have and what you prefer!
