Hospital de peregrinos San Juan Bautista

Grañón

Description and Notice

Often recommended for its charm and communal feel. No beds, only mattress and a large group meal. Situated in the church tower. There is no sello at the albergue, so you'll need to get one from the bar up the road.

This was my favorite stay on the Camino so far. The atmosphere was welcoming, the people were friendly and it was a true “Camino experience.” The hosts are all volunteers and they truly love what they’re doing! It’s very communal with the preparing, serving and cleaning but honestly was part of the charm. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!

This was a delight! It was a great change from the municipal albergues. I loved sleeping in a medieval church and the hospiliteros did a great job of accommodating everyone’s food restrictions.

Very memorable evening, we were singing birthday songs in all languages and had a very special moment in the church sharing our whishes. Even doing the dishes together in the big buckets was one of the best experiences, had SO MUCH fun here. Thank you!!!

One of the “must stay” albergues on the camino. I was cold and wet after walking in the rain the whole day. The hospitaleros turned up the heat and made a fire in the fireplace. I was early so got a mattress in the attic. The accommodation is very basic, but the wonderful experience more that makes up for it. This was my second stay and I will stay here sgain…

If you like your comfort and privacy - this place isn’t for you.

Run by the energy and kindness of volunteer “hospitaleros” (not nuns), this is a true pilgrim refuge that offers shelter and food to those to seek it. We cooked dinner together, attended mass, dined together and then shared our experiences over candlelight in the church. The “stamp” (sello) of this albergue is on your heart and in the form of hugs shared between pilgrims. If you come with the right attitude, the magic of this place will remain with you forever.

[Ladies travelling September 2024 - beware of a French man called Marcel who made lewd comments to females and struggled to keep his hands to himself in this environment. He’s walking the Camino as a pilgrim and ruined this beautiful experience for me, however, I’m unsure where else to report his behaviour other than here].

They have very few toalets and showers, you have to sleep on a matress on the stone floor with lots of other pilgrims - if you don't come early and have space on the top floor.
You participate in the preparing of the food, eat all together and clean after, and participate in the pilgrims mass. And it never gets full, there is always place for more pilgrims
All counted for, it is one of the best experiences you can have on whole camino.
I stopped there twice and would do it again.

These people who run the place know how to play to their audience.
Same old script every day.
Then to still be expecting folk to sleep on a gym mat is taking things too far.
You can bet the nuns sleep in comfy beds.

An amazing place to stay and one of my favorites on the Camino. Had lots of fun at dinner and cooking with everyone
